Marseille have announced the signing of Holland midfielder Kevin Strootman from Italian side Roma.

The Ligue 1 outfit have paid an initial 25million euros (£22.7million) for the 28-year-old, which could rise by an extra three million euros based on player and club performances. The length of his contract has not been disclosed.

Strootman is the latest player to leave the Italian capital in a big-money move following goalkeeper Alisson Becker's transfer to Liverpool and fellow midfielder Radja Nainggolan's departure to Serie A rivals Inter Milan earlier this summer.

The central midfielder made 44 appearances in all competitions last season as he helped the Giallorossi to third place in the table and the semi-finals of the Champions League, with a remarkable comeback to knock out Barcelona in the last eight.

Strootman played the full 90 minutes of Roma's season-opening 1-0 win at Torino last week but was left out of the matchday squad for Monday's 3-3 home draw with Atalanta as the deal moved closer to completion.
