What action is being taken across UK in wake of Grenfell?

  • Video report by ITV News Correspondent Dan Rivers

A national safety operation is urgently taking place to identify buildings with cladding like that used on Grenfell Tower.

Three towers in Barnet, north-east London were found to have similar rain screen panels on their cladding as Grenfell Tower, which are to be removed.

In addition to Barnett, a further eight councils in London are removing cladding, along with Plymouth, Portsmouth, Salford and Sunderland.

Sprinklers are to be retro-fitted in areas including Birmingham, Nottingham and Croydon, while authorities in Liverpool are looking at drawing up an at-risk register for vulnerable people who may need extra help in case of a fire.

Camden Council has evacuated four of five tower blocks after firefighters said they could not guarantee the safety of the buildings due to concerns over fire doors, gas pipes and insulation, combined with external cladding.
