Landlords take around £8 billion a year in rent.

Around £8 billion in government payments goes to private landlords every year, according to Green co-leader Caroline Lucas.

Ms Lucas is right.

This year about £8.8 billion in housing benefit will go to private landlords, via tenants renting privately.
