Aleppo evacuation operation 'in last stages'

The evacuation of civilians and rebels from eastern Aleppo is in its "last stages," the International Committee of the Red Cross has said.

Around 34,000 people have been evacuated in the week-long rescue operation.

Over 4,000 rebel fighters left between Wednesday and Thursday to rebel-held western rural Aleppo, as per an agreement reached with the government.

Thousands are expected to be evacuated as the rescue operation continues throughout Friday, a Red Cross spokeswoman said.

Shots fired at ambulance evacuating children from Aleppo

Dramatic footage shows the moment the first ambulances trying to evacuate injured people and their families from rebel-held Aleppo came under fire.

Filmed by Mojahed Abo Al Jood, a freelance cameraman for ITV News, it shows terrified children crying as they are carried out of the attacked ambulance.

Gun shots can be heard as the group flee with their mothers to a nearby house.

Activists say one person was killed and three people were wounded when fighters they say are loyal to the Syrian government opened fire. ITV News has been unable to independently verify who fired the shots.

A Reuters witness in nearby government-held territory heard a burst of gunfire that lasted several minutes.
