Cuba in national mourning for former leader Fidel Castro

Cuba is observing nine days of national mourning for former President Fidel Castro, who has died at the age of 90.

The socialist revolutionary's death was announced by his brother, Raul Castro, the incumbent Cuban president, on state television late on Friday.

In his address the elderly leader said Mr Castro, who ruled Cuba since 1959 and survived countless assassination attempts, died at 10.29pm on Friday.

Justin Trudeau praises 'larger than life' Fidel Castro

Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau said it was with "deep sorrow" that he learned of Fidel Castro's death and said the revolutionary had made "significant improvements" in Cuba.

The late Cuban leader was a friend of Mr Trudeau's father.

In a statement, Mr Trudeau said: “It is with deep sorrow that I learned today of the death of Cuba’s longest serving President.

"Fidel Castro was a larger than life leader who served his people for almost half a century. A legendary revolutionary and orator, Mr. Castro made significant improvements to the education and healthcare of his island nation.

"While a controversial figure, both Mr. Castro's supporters and detractors recognized his tremendous dedication and love for the Cuban people who had a deep and lasting affection for 'el Comandante'."
