President-elect Donald Trump told President Vladimir Putin he is looking forward to having a strong and enduring relationship with Russia, officials said.
Putin called Trump on Monday to offer his congratulations following his election victory.
The pair discussed a range of issues including threats and challenges facing both countries, strategic economic issues and "the historical U.S.-Russia relationship that dates back over 200 years", the Presidential Transition Team said in a statement.
They agreed to work towards "constructive cooperation", the Kremlin said.
Trump will take office on January 20, replacing Barack Obama whose relations with Putin have become tense over various issues including Syria and Ukraine in recent years.
