US President-elect Donald Trump calls for unity

US President-elect Donald Trump has urged Americans to "bind the wounds of division" after a brutal presidential election as he claimed victory.

He promised that he would be a "President for all Americans" and he said his government would work for the entire country to "renew the American dream".

He told supporters at his 'victory party' in New York, that his rival Hillary Clinton called him to "congratulate us", and he said he "congratulated her on a hard-fought campaign" and added that "we owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to our country".

The 70-year-old Republican has made history as the oldest person to win the race to the White House, but he is also the first president in more than 60 years without experience as a governor or in Congress.

Vice president-elect Mike Pence called it "a historic night" and said he was "deeply humbled".
