Mexico's peso plunges as Trump surges ahead

Mexico's peso has plunged after Donald Trump took the lead in the battle for the crucial swing state of Florida.

The bellwether state, which has voted for the presidential victor at every US election since 1964, is currently too close to call.

The billionaire Republican has so far amassed a projected 137 electoral votes to Mrs Clinton's 104, with 270 needed to reach the White House.

Concerns of a Trump victory had weighed heavily on the peso since he had threatened to rip up a free trade deal with Mexico and tax money sent home by migrants in order to build a wall on the southern U.S. border.

The peso weakened more than eight percent in Tuesday after-market trading for Mexico and in Wednesday trading in Asia, nearing life lows and closing in on 20 pesos per dollar.
