US House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan has said he is "sickened" by inappropriate comments the party's Presidential candidate Donald Trump made about women.

In a statement, Mr Ryan also said Mr Trump would not be appearing at a scheduled joint rally in Wisconsin on Saturday, which would have been the first time the two men appeared on a platform together.

I am sickened by what I heard today. Women are to be championed and revered, not objectified.

I hope Mr Trump treats this situation with the seriousness it deserves and works to demonstrate to the country that he has greater respect for women than this clip suggests.

In the meantime, he is no longer attending tomorrow’s event in Wisconsin.

Mr Trump's campaign confirmed that his vice presidential candidate Mike Pence will represent him at the event in Wisconsin, while he stays in New York to prepare for the second televised debate with rival Hillary Clinton.
