JustGiving appeal for boxer Mike Towell hits £20,000

A £20,000 JustGiving target for the family of boxer Mike Towell, who died on Friday from head injuries, has been reached in a matter of hours.

Towell died in hospital after suffering swelling to the brain during a bout in Glasgow on Thursday night.

The appeal, set up by former boxer Ricky Hatton on Saturday, will raise money for Towell's partner and young son.

Scottish boxer Mike Towell has died in hospital after suffering serious injuries during a bout on Thursday night.

The 25-year-old suffered a fifth-round loss to Dale Evans, from Carmarthenshire, in a St Andrews Sporting Club fight at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow, after which he was rushed to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

Towell, from Dundee, had been undefeated going into the British welterweight title eliminator, with 11 previous wins and one draw on his professional record.

His management said on Friday he had passed away with his family at his bedside.

After the fight, opponent Evans described Towell as a "true warrior".
