Clinton and Trump trade blows in first presidential election debate

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have clashed in a fiery first presidential debate in the race for the White House.

The Democrat and Republican rivals squared off in a 90-minute debate at Hofstra University in New York, which was screened to tens of millions of television viewers in America and live-streamed around the world.

The rival candidates sparred on issues ranging from the economy and the fight against so-called Islamic State (IS) to their fitness for office and the "birther" controversy.

Trump attacks Clinton on Twitter following first debate

Following their first head-to-head debate on Monday evening, US presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have gone back to Twitter to trade criticisms.

Describing his opponent as "Crooked Hillary", Mr Trump tweeted that he "really enjoyed" the debate.

Meanwhile, a tweet sent from Clinton's account said: "Only one person on last night's stage is prepared to be Commander-in-Chief."

Another read: "I have a winning temperament." —Donald Trump last night. Really? #SheWon."
