Jonathan Strobel's lawsuit was filed in Florida one day after the South Korea-based electronics giant recalled around a million Note 7s sold in the US after 92 reports of batteries overheating - including 26 burns and 55 reports of damage to property.

Strobel, aged 28, said he had been in a Costco store in the Palm Beach Gardens area on September 9 when his phone exploded.

He claimed he suffered severe burns on his right leg and his thumb, which was injured as he tried to remove the phone from his pocket.

Samsung spokeswoman Danielle Meister Cohen said:

We don't comment on pending litigation.

We are urging all Note 7 owners to power their device down and exchange it immediately.
