Six die as strong winds batter British beaches

Six people have died in five separate incidents after strong winds and rain wreaked havoc on coastal cities and beaches across the UK.

  • Windsurfer Dave Baker, who was in his 60s, died in Essex
  • Julie Walker, 37, and her son Lucas, 7, died after getting into difficulty in Aberdeen
  • Rudy Bruynius died after he and his family were swept into the sea in Newquay
  • Joy Godfray, 31, also died after being rescued off the coast of Jersey
  • A man in his 60s has died after getting into trouble in a rip current in Dorset

Man dies in Dorset after getting into trouble in sea

A man in Dorset has become the sixth person known to have died in separate incidents off the British coast amid strong winds and stormy conditions.

The man, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, who got into trouble outside the safe swim area at Sandbanks beach in Poole, at around 3.30pm on Saturday

The victim, who experienced difficulties in the rip current, was recovered from the water by lifeguards who performed CPR, Dorset Police said.

An air ambulance and paramedics attended, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
