The head of Dallas police has insisted that he was right to blow up a gunman using a bomb carried by a robot.

Chief David Brown said the decision had saved lives as shooter Micah Johnson was intending to attack other officers after a spree that saw five police killed and seven others wounded.

I approved it and would do it again if presented with same circumstances.

The force's decision to kill a suspect with a remotely controlled-bomb is thought to mark a first for US police.

Mr Brown told CNN that he had asked his staff "use their imaginations" to disable Mr Johnson after talks aimed at bringing an end to a standoff failed.

"Without our actions, he would have hurt more officers," he said.
