Oscar Pistorius jailed for six years for murdering Reeva Steenkamp

South African paralympic gold medallist Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to six years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.

The double-amputee's manslaughter conviction was overturned last year by an appeals court, which convicted Pistorius of the more serious charge of murder.

Pistorius sentenced to six years for Steenkamp murder

Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to six years for the murder in 2013 of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The sentence was less than many had expected, and under the prescribed minimum 15-year sentence the prosecution had called for.

Before announcing her decision Judge Thokozile Masipa outlined both mitigating and aggravating factors in the case, concluding that the mitigating circumstances outweighed the aggravating factors.

Pistoriuys was taken to jail immediately following the hearing.
