Police have said concerns were raised about the missing children because of the weather conditions.
A police spokesman said: "Dyfed-Powys Police were made aware of a group of children missing in the Llyn y Fan Fach area at approximately 1pm.
"Concern was expressed for their welfare due to the inclement weather.
"Mountain Rescue Team are leading the search activity and the UK Coastguard helicopter is also assisting.
"The number of children in the group has not been confirmed."
The schoolchildren rescued from the Brecon Beacons during a Duke of Edinburgh exercise were never missing, their headteacher has insisted.
