Roughly 510 million people from the EU have uncontrolled access to move to the UK, according to former Mayor of London Boris Johnson.

The EU’s population is indeed an estimated 508 million.

But EU rules on free movement of people only apply to citizens of the European Economic Area and Switzerland, according to fact-checking organisation Full Fact, analysing the live BBC referendum debate.

So there are about 440 million people outside the UK who could potentially live and work here.

Just over 3% of EU citizens lived in another member country in 2015.
