David Davies: Closer than ever to team being thrown out

A former FA boss has said football officials are closer to throwing a team out of a major tournament than at any time in history, after the opening weekend of Euro 2016 was marred by violence.

David Davies, the Former Executive Director of the FA, told ITV's Good Morning Britain the pressure on UEFA to act is "considerable".

UEFA has threatened England and Russia with disqualification after their supporters were involved in clashes for a third day in Marseille on Saturday ahead of the two sides meeting in an evening kick off, which ended with Russian fans appearing to charge at England fans.

"I regret to say that this morning we are nearer than we have ever been to a team being thrown out of a major tournament because of the behaviour of its fans," said Davies.

"The pressure on UEFA to act...is considerable. As far as England is concerned the big problem is the history of English supporters which weighs heavily so that the people in Marseille this morning tend to say 'whenever there's a problem, there's England', regardless of whose fault it may or may not have been."
