Fact check: 'Brexit means no guarantee to access single market'

Credit: ITV

A vote for Brexit means Britain would not have guaranteed access to the EU single market, according to Remain campaigner Nicola Sturgeon.

The Scottish politician added that there are currently no countries with access to the market who don’t abide by the rules of the EU and pay for it e.g. Norway.

This is about right, according to fact-checking organisation Full Fact, working with ITV News.

Both Norway and Switzerland keep out of some EU activities, such as the Common Agricultural Policy. But they bring many of their laws into line with EU rules in return for access to the single market.

Norway incorporates single market rules as they're made, while Switzerland accepts EU law from time to time in return for more market access.

Both make a financial contribution as well, although it’s less per head than full EU membership.
