Deputy Chief Constable Dawn Copley, who was appointed acting chief constable of South Yorkshire Police after the suspension of David Crompton following the Hillsborough inquest findings, has "offered to step back to her substantive role" while another temporary chief constable is sought, South Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner said.
The families of the 96 Hillsborough victims united to sing You'll Never Walk Alone after a jury delivered a verdict their relatives were unlawfully killed.
There were also cries of "justice" as they left the inquest, which had been sitting for more than two years.
Solicitors acting for 20 of the families said they were "appalled to see the shambles in South Yorkshire Police" following the inquest.
