Mass evacuations and safety fears after deadly earthquakes rock southern Japan

Nearly a quarter of a million people have been told to evacuate their homes in the wake of two deadly earthquakes that hit Japan this week.

More than 40 people were killed and 1,000 injured in the latest powerful earthquake to hit the country, just a day after another quake in the same region.

Many are reported to still be trapped in rubble and the quakes also caused a huge landslide near a dam.

Volcano erupts as Japan quake death toll rises to 15

A small eruption occurred at a volcano in southern Japan following a magnitude 7.3 earthquake.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency has kept its alert level at 2 on a scale of 5 for Mt. Aso.

The quake, the second in as many days in the region, has killed at least 15 people and left hundreds injured.

The natural disaster has also hit economic activity in the southern island of Kyushu.
