More than 1,500 refugees and migrants have arrived in Greece overnight on Sunday, despite an EU-Turkey deal agreeing to send them back coming into force.
In excess of 2,000 refugees are believed to have made the perilous crossing to Lesbos since the deal came into effect at midnight on Saturday.
Hundreds of migrants poured into the Greek islands overnight despite a new Europe-wide agreement to close the border from yesterday.
Officials said that a total of 1,662 people had arrived in Greece on perilous sea boats by 7am on Monday morning.
That is already a significant increase on the 875 reported to have made the crossing on Sunday, the first day after the implementation of a new deal with Turkey designed to close the route.
Among the arrivals last night were 98 refugees and migrants who were rescued from the open sea by coast guards.
Many of those arriving into Greece said they were not aware of the new rules designed to block the route and send back any people who make it into Europe.
The frontline of the EU crackdown on migrants shows that hundreds are still trying to get in - and the new rules aren't likely to stop them.
