Officials earlier said they believed the banned Kurdish Workers Party (PKK) was behind the attack, but now say new evidence suggests it have been the work of either the PKK or Islamic State.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Armed police have put central Istanbul on lockdown after the explosion in Istiklal Street, a pedestrian boulevard lined with international shops, cafés, theatres and foreign consulates.

Four bystanders, plus the bomber, were killed in the blast while 36 others were hurt. Turkey's health minister Mehmet Müezzinoğlu has said seven people are in a "serious" condition.
