EU row: Cameron has 'low opinion of British people'

Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith has accused the Prime Minister of having "a low opinion of the British people" by downplaying the UK's prospects if it left the EU.

It comes after a Sunday newspaper column in which David Cameron accused MPs backing an EU exit of wanting to take "the gamble of the century" with the country's future.

Amid rising tensions between the pro- and anti-Brexit camps, Mr Cameron has reportedly been threatened with a challenge to his leadership unless he tones down attacks on MPs backing the "leave" campaign.

Sturgeon: Brexit may create desire to look at independence

There could be a "desire to look again at independence" if a majority of Scots vote to remain in the EU but the UK still leaves the union, Nicola Sturgeon has told ITV News.

The First Minister of Scotland was speaking as an ITV News poll conducted by ComRes suggested there is more support among Scots for the UK to stay in the EU compared to the whole of Britain.

Ms Sturgeon said the "No" campaign in the 2014 referendum argued voting for independence would mean leaving the EU. She said if Scotland was now to leave the EU against its will there would be "significant anger".

She said it would be a "democratically indefensible outcome" for Scots to vote to "remain" but still be forced out of the EU.

"Inevitably people in Scotland will say 'shouldn't we look again at whether or not Scotland should be independent'?" Ms Sturgeon said.
