N Korea launches long-range rocket in defiance of UN sanctions

North Korea has launched a long-range rocket which it claims is carrying 'a satellite'.

The launch was made in defiance of United Nations sanctions barring Pyongyang from using ballistic missile technology.

The US strongly condemned the event as a "destabilising and provocative action".

An emergency meeting of UN Security Council members is to be held to agree a collective response.

Hammond: North Korean rocket test is a 'slap in the face'

The foreign secretary has said the North Korean missile test is a "slap in the face" for the UN and the international community.

Philip Hammond said: "North Korea's actions are extremely destabilising in the region and beyond."

Hammond said he had spoken to the Japanese foreign minister this morning and they are looking into economic sanctions that could be applied against North Korea, but it does require agreement across the UN security council.

Whatever the North Koreans say we are clear that this missile test involves prohibited ballistic missile technology that is subject to restricted United Nations resolutions.

The fact that the North Koreans have carried out this test today is a slap in the face for the UN and the international community.
