N Korea launches long-range rocket in defiance of UN sanctions

North Korea has launched a long-range rocket which it claims is carrying 'a satellite'.

The launch was made in defiance of United Nations sanctions barring Pyongyang from using ballistic missile technology.

The US strongly condemned the event as a "destabilising and provocative action".

An emergency meeting of UN Security Council members is to be held to agree a collective response.

The Foreign Office has "strongly" condemned North Korea's launch of a long-range rocket thought to have been a test of its ballistic missile technology.

North Korea, which says its rocket programme is aimed at launching satellites, fired the rocket from its missile base on the west coast on Sunday

We strongly condemn North Korea's missile launch.

North Korea is fully aware that multiple UN Security Council Resolutions prohibit the use of ballistic missile technology.

We will work with allies and partners to ensure there is a robust response if the DPRK persists in violating these resolutions.

We will also emphasise to North Korea through diplomatic channels that such actions will only serve to isolate the country further.
