At least 132 people are believed to be buried under the rubble of an apartment building in Tianan which collapsed after an earthquake, according to a city official.

The total is much higher than authorities had first estimated as rescuers combed the wreckage of the 17-storey building with sniffer dogs and acoustic equipment, looking for signs of life.

The official added that rescue crews believe it is possible to reach 29 of those trapped more easily but the rest are thought to be further down the collapsed building.
