David Bowie: World pays respects after music icon's death

Tributes have poured in across the world for musician David Bowie, after he died from cancer aged 69.

Hundreds gathered in his birthplace of Brixton to celebrate the life of a man whose career spanned six decades, while tributes were also left at his home in New York, his star on the Hollywood Boulevard and in Berlin, where he lived during perhaps his most fruitful creative period in the 1970s.

According to a statement on the singer's Facebook page, the performer died on Sunday, surrounded by his loved ones.

David Bowie has died at the age of 69 after an 18-month battle with cancer.

The death of the iconic British singer was confirmed in a statement released on his Facebook and Twitter pages, two days after he released his latest album.

A statement on the singer's official Facebook page read: "David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief."

His son, director Duncan Jones, tweeted his reaction:
