Execution row: Bahrain joins Saudi Arabia in severing ties with Iran

Saudi Arabia and Bahrain have severed diplomatic ties with Iran over the storming of the Saudi embassy in Tehran following the kingdom's execution of a prominent Shia cleric.

Sudan has expelled Iran's ambassador and the United Arab Emirates is cutting the number of Iranian diplomats it allows to be in the country,

Iran's Supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warned Saudi Arabia that it will face "divine retribution" after officials executed Nimr al-Nimr.

Saudi executed al-Nimr alongside 46 others in relation to alleged 'terrorism' offences.

Russia 'ready to act as intermediary' during Saudi-Iran dispute

Russia is reportedly ready to act as an intermediary to help settle the dispute between Iran and Saudi Arabia after the two countries cut ties in the wake of growing tensions.

Russian news agency RIA, said a Foreign Ministry source said that "as friends" they "would be ready to play, if it is demanded, an intermediary role in ... settling the existing contradictions and any new ones that arise between these two countries."

The Russia's foreign ministry has also officially expressed "serious concern" about the worsening situation between the two countries and urged them both "to show restraint and avoid any steps that would complicate the situation".
