Homes evacuated as river bursts its banks after heavy rain causes flooding in Scotland

Scores of homes have been evacuated in Aberdeenshire after the River Don burst its banks and the River Ythan threatened to overflow, while people in an area of Aberdeen were advised to leave their properties.

Roads have been closed and trains and flights cancelled in Aberdeen and across the surrounding region as water levels reached record highs.

Historic Scottish castle under threat from floodwaters

Abergeldie Castle has stood on the banks of the River Dee, a neighbour to the Queen's Balmoral Estate in Aberdeenshire, for 450 years.

But now the river, swollen by the flood waters from Storm Frank, has eaten into the castle's foundations, forcing the castle's owner John Seton Howard Gordon to leave and threatening to send the whole structure tumbling into the river.
