Residents help each other escape floods in Glenridding

Residents have told how they had to help each other escape when the second flood in four days hit Glenridding.

Local farmer Joe Taylforth said he witnessed "folk holding hands" as they attempted to get out of their flood-ridden homes and businesses adjacent to the river.

Resident Mandy Howard-Carter, 35, said her quick-thinking husband, Ali, who used to be in the Mountain Rescue service, fetched a rope and fed it across the bridge to help villagers wade through the knee-deep water.

A couple of folks started holding hands in order to get out of their shops they had been trying to clear out. Once the banks burst, everyone was running down and helping.

We had got everything pretty much cleaned up, then the strong winds and heavy rain hit.

– Mr Taylforth

Shopkeeper Alan Brown has spoken of his devastation as the floods leave his family "back at square one".
