May: 1,900 security jobs to help combat terror threat

Theresa May makes a statement on the Paris attacks in the House of Commons

The Home Secretary has outlined details of the UK's response in the wake of the terror attacks in Paris on Friday, which include an increased police presence at major events and more border force checks.

Theresa May said reviews of the Paris attacks were under way to ensure any available lessons could be learnt by the British police and security services.

She also announced extra funding for MI5, MI6 and GCHQ to recruit 1,900 staff to "better respond to the threat we face from international terrorism, cyber attacks and other global risks".

She added that a review of aviation security would see the money spent on protecting airports increase throughout this Parliament.

The Home Secretary also said the UK wants to see action "taken on firearms entering and moving throughout the EU and ensuring we have the right capabilities at the UK border to detect firearms being smuggled in".
