Oscar Pistorius is to be released from prison on Tuesday 20 October, after which he will serve house arrest, the South African parole board has said.

The release date means the athlete will have served one day short of a year for killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide in September 2014, after firing four shots through a locked toilet door in his house on Valentine's Day the previous year.

He received a five-year sentence, but is due for release under strict supervision due to rules designed to ease chronic prison overcrowding in the country.

The parole board said Pistorius would serve the "correctional supervision" for exactly four years after his release next week.
