Royal Dutch Shell is to stop exploration activity off the coast of Alaska due to poor results in a key location, the company has announced.

It said it had not found sufficient amounts of oil and gas in a well in the Chukchi Sea, located about 150 miles from the city of Barrow in Alaska, to warrant further exploration there.

The company had been given permission to begin drilling at the Burger J Well in August.

This is a clearly disappointing exploration outcome for this part of the basin.

In a statement, Shell said it would cease further exploration in offshore Alaska "for the foreseeable future".
