The president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker has offered Croatia technical and logistical assistance to help the country deal with the huge number of refugees crossing its border.

More than 17,000 refugees and migrants have entered the country since Hungary closed its borders on Wednesday morning

In a joint statement, Juncker and Croatian prime minister Zora Milanovic stressed the need to strengthen the EU's external borders, step up assistance to countries struggling to deal with the influx and agree a plan to share the burden between member states.

The statement was released ahead of an extraordinary summit on migration due to take place next Wednesday.
