European countries to increase security checks on trains following attack

European ministers have agreed to increase security on key international rail routes and improve intelligence sharing after the thwarted gun attack on a French train.

Three Americans and a British grandfather managed to overpower a suspected Islamist gunman who opened fire on a high-speed train heading to Paris last week.

Moroccan national Ayoub El Khazzani has been charged with attempted murder of a terrorist nature and was remanded in custody after a hearing in the capital.

Injured US serviceman 'acted so quickly and so bravely'

One of three American men who helped overpower a gunman on a train in northern France, remains in hospital after being injured in the incident.

Spencer Stone, who is a member of the US Air Force, is believed to have sustained head and neck wounds inflicted by the suspected terrorist.

US student Anthony Sadler said: "I'm really proud of my friend, he acted so quickly and so bravely."

Alek Skarlatos, 22, who is member of the US National Guard, also praised his friend's actions.

Spencer ran a good ten metres to get to the guy and we didn't know that his gun not working or anything like that, Spencer just ran anyway and if anybody would have gotten shot it would have been Spencer for sure and we're very lucky that nobody got killed, especially Spencer.

The men added that Mr Stone was "in good spirits" and "doing great" as he recovers in hospital.
