David Cameron defends decision to give £3m to Kids Company

David Cameron has defended the decision to give a £3 million Government grant to Kids Company against the advice of civil servants, insisting it was the "right thing to do" to give the charity "one last chance".

The charity was forced to shut its doors on Wednesday after funding ran out, amid allegations of financial mismanagement, which it denies.

Kids Company workers and supporters marched to the gates of Downing Street on Friday protesting the closure of the charity.

The charity closed yesterday after running out of money.

Camila Batmanghelidjh told the BBC that within 20 minutes of a Cabinet office grant, also of £3 million, being handed to the charity last week, "the police call out of the blue to say that there's been allegations of sexual abuse related to Kids Company".

She said the philanthropist who also offered money had panicked and withdrew.

Ms Batmanghelidjh blamed"rumour-mongering civil servants" and "ill-suited ministers" for the charity's demise.

She also warned that thousands of children will be "abandoned" and called on David Cameron to explain what would now happen to the vulnerable young people.
