The first remains of the victims of the Gemanwings plane crash have been repatriated three months on.

The plane went down over the French Alps on March 24 killing all 150 people on board.

Investigations revealed co-pilot Andreas Lubitz deliberately crashed the plane after suffering from severe depression.

Airline Lufthansa, the parent company of Germanwings, sent 44 coffins to Düsseldorf which included the remains of 16 schoolchildren who were returning from a school trip.

A Lufthansa spokesman said: "After this first special flight to Düsseldorf, the other victims will be gradually transferred to their home countries in the coming weeks."
