A suspected Islamic State senior leader has been killed in a Special Ops raid in Syria, US Secretary of Defence has said.
The mission - sanctioned by Barack Obama - was intended merely to capture Abu Sayyaf, who the US said helped direct "illict oil, gas and financial operations".
However, the suspected militant was killed when he engaged US personnel in combat, the White House said.
US Military Special Operations forces have carried out a raid inside Syria and have killed a senior Islamic State Commander, CNN has reported citing unnamed sources.
The network reports that US commandos flew into eastern Syria to carry out the raid. US Defence Secretary Ash Carter said that US Special Ops targeted Islamic State leader Abu Sayyaf.
The Democratic presidential candidate may also have shown his cards on his choice of running mate.
The US president also shared a post on Twitter accusing Dr Anthony Fauci of misleading the public over hydroxychloroquine.
