A suspected Islamic State senior leader has been killed in a Special Ops raid in Syria, US Secretary of Defence has said.
The mission - sanctioned by Barack Obama - was intended merely to capture Abu Sayyaf, who the US said helped direct "illict oil, gas and financial operations".
However, the suspected militant was killed when he engaged US personnel in combat, the White House said.
US Special Ops forces killed around a dozen opposition fighters in an overnight US Special Ops raid targeting a senior Islamic State figure, a US official told the Reuters news agency on condition of anonymity.
Defence Secretary Ash Carter earlier confirmed that no US forces were killed or wounded in the operation.
The Democratic presidential candidate may also have shown his cards on his choice of running mate.
The US president also shared a post on Twitter accusing Dr Anthony Fauci of misleading the public over hydroxychloroquine.
