Alexander: Tories proposed child benefit cut

Liberal Democrat Danny Alexander has accused the Conservatives of being bent on "slashing support for families" while the two parties were in coalition.

Alexander said £8 billion of proposed welfare cuts that the Lib Dems blocked included limiting Child Benefit and Child Tax Credit to two children at a cost of £3,500 for a family of three.

The Tories said they did not recognise the figures cited and called the claim "desperate stuff".

Nick Clegg has backed Danny Alexander's decision to leak "secret" Tory plans to make £8 billion of welfare cuts.

Speaking on a an LBC radio phone-in this morning, the Deputy Prime Minister said that he shared the Lib Dem Chief Secretary to the Treasury's "intense frustration verging on anger".

I share Danny's intense frustration verging on anger that the Conservatives think it is okay a week before an election to say that they are going to take the equivalent of £1,500 off eight million of the most vulnerable families in this country and they can't even be bothered to spell out exactly what their plans involve.
