'I am a woman', announces reality TV star Bruce Jenner
Olympic gold medalist and reality TV star Bruce Jenner has revealed that he is "for all intents and purposes" a woman.
The 65-year-old's announcement on a US TV interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer follows much speculation that he was transitioning to become a woman.
Jenner, who is the former husband of Kris Kardashian, said that he had been confused about gender identity since childhood and did not want to live a lie any more.
"I can't do that any longer," Jenner told Sawyer.
Jenner said he had not decided whether he would undergo sex change surgery.
He also revealed that he had never been sexually attracted to men and wanted to make it clear that gender identity and sexuality were separate things.
His daughter Kylie Jenner took to Twitter to say she was "so proud".
His stepdaughter, Kim Kardashian, said Jenner's announcement had "opened the doors for others to be courageous".
