The alleged captain of a sunken migrant ship, which killed more than 800, has appeared in an Italian court. It comes as the EU has agreed to treble its funding to tackle the on-going crisis.

Video shows captain of capsized migrant boat laughing

The Tunisian captain of a boat that capsized drowning 800 migrants has been filmed laughing. Mohammed Ali Malek was arrested on suspicion of multiple homicide and has been accused of ramming a merchant ship coming to its rescue. He was one of only 28 survivors who were brought to Italy from the hundreds of mainly African and Bangladeshi migrants on board.
