A nun in her 70s is in hospital after being gang-raped in the convent school where she lives in eastern India.

Up to 12 men broke into the Convent of Jesus and Mary School in Ranaghat, West Bengal, overnight, police said today.

"A preliminary investigation has revealed that a nun at the school was gagged and gang-raped," police inspector general Anuj Sharma told AFP.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the alleged attack.

Residents have held protests in the streets and blocked off the main highway in protest over the attack.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has described the incident as "horrific" and ordered an investigation, The Indian Express reported.

State Urban Development Minister Firhad described it as an "attack on humanity".
