British star Eddie Redmayne has won the Golden Globe for best actor in a drama - beating off fierce competition from both sides of the Atlantic.

The 33 year-old bagged the coveted award for his moving portrayal of the physicist Stephen Hawking in The Theory Of Everything.

He overcame stiff competition from fellow Brit Benedict Cumberbatch to be handed the award.

Redmayne, who tied the knot with his wife Hannah Bagshawe last month, paid tribute to Professor Hawking and his co-star Felicity Jones, who he called a "formidable actress who raised my game".

Also referring to his new wife and having to cut short their honeymoon to come to the ceremony, he said: "I promised her sunshine - it wasn't so great today - but thanks for giving us a honeymoon we'll remember"
