Duke and Duchess of Cambridge say goodbye to New York

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are on their way back to the UK after an action-packed visit to the United States.

The pair attended a gala dinner for their former university, St Andrews, last night in New York.

The Duchess has told how she was moved after visiting the memorial to victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks during their visit.

William and Kate paid their respects to the victims by laying a bouquet of white roses - the state flower of New York - on a bronze panel lining one of the pools that was embossed with the names of the dead.

The Duchess of Cambridge said she was "moved" by her visit to the 9/11 memorial and being able to touch the names of those who died.

Kate, who signed her name alongside William's in a book of condolence, told the museum's chief of staff Allison Blais she was in awe of how big the museum was.

The memorial is for the 2,983 victims from 90 countries who died in the attacks 13 years ago.
