Typhoon Hagupit downgraded to 'tropical storm'

Typhoon Hagupit has been downgraded to the status of 'tropical storm' as it continues to make its way across the country.

Known locally as Ruby the storm made landfall on Saturday leaving in its wake flooded streets, fallen trees, and entire regions without any means of communication.

More than one million people continued to shelter in makeshift evacuation centres across the Philippines today as it was reported at least 27 people had died in the storm.

Million evacuated as typhoon sweeps across Philippines

Torrential rain and high winds are still sweeping across the central Philippines, as a powerful typhoon moves slowly across the islands.

After thousands died in a similar storm last year, a million people were evacuated before this typhoon struck.
