Band Aid 30 tops the charts despite controversy

Band Aid 30's Do They Know It's Christmas?, which features a host of stars, stormed to the top of the singles chart today.

The reworked version of 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' features stars including One Direction, Bono and Ellie Goulding, and is expected to raise millions to help fight the Ebola crisis in West Africa.

Emeli Sande was one of those who questioned the lyrics which had been changed to reflect the Ebola crisis in west Africa.

Geldof: Band Aid 30 'raised £1m in just five minutes'

The Band Aid 30 single has already “gone bonkers” online, with more than £1 million raised in pre-orders within five minutes of its launch on X Factor yesterday evening.

Bob Geldof revealed online orders of the single, which counts One Direction, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Ellie Goulding and Ed Sheeran among its star-studded line-up, had already rocketed.

It's gone manic. That's the digital age. We promoted thesingle on X Factor, Simon Cowell gave us five minutes of the show last night.

Within four or five minutes of leaving the show we had amillion quid. That's extraordinary.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, he said the song was also set to be translated into French and German, though accused Germany of being “laggards” in the fight against Ebola despite being “the most powerful economy in Europe”.

It's as dangerous for them as it is for us. This thing is a flight away from us.
