Exclusive: Teenage victim's account of sexual abuse ignored by police

Police in Manchester failed to investigate claims of sexual abuse despite receiving a written account from the teenage victim, ITV News can reveal.

Victoria Agoglia Byrne, 15, died from a suspected drugs overdose in 2003 but police have never pursued allegations from her and her family that she was sexually exploited by a gang of older men.

It follows revelations by ITV News that Greater Manchester Police failed to act on an internal report detailing claims of abuse against numerous girls in 2004.

Yvette Cooper: You can't have children going unprotected

Speaking in response to an ITV News investigation that has found police have failed to investigate hundreds of claims of child abuse in Manchester, Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper told ITV News: "You cannot have children going unprotected because of this failure to stop abusers".

She called for reforms so that police take such accusations "more seriously".
