ITV News poll: Labour establishes 'convincing' lead in key marginals

Labour has established a "convincing" 11-point lead over Conservatives in the key marginal seats Ed Miliband would need to win to secure victory in next year's general election, according to a new poll by ComRes for ITV News.

The survey of the 40 tightest Labour/Conservative battlegrounds comes as a further blow for Prime Minister David Cameron, who is trying to use his party's annual conference in Birmingham as a launchpad to secure an overall majority in 2015.

In the 40 crucial constituencies, Mr Miliband's party enjoys the backing of 41% of voters (up five points since a similar poll in June), ahead of the Tories on 30% (down one), Ukip unchanged on 17% and Liberal Democrats on 6% (down one).

David Cameron is seen as a better Prime Minister than Ed Miliband among voters in key marginal seats, according to a new ITV News/ComRes poll.

This is despite the survey suggesting a hefty 11-point lead for Labour over the Conservatives in the battleground constituencies.

Close to half of voters (46%) said they would prefer Mr Cameron to remain as Prime Minister, against 33% who said they would prefer Mr Miliband.

ComRes interviewed a representative sample of 1,000 adults living in the 40 most marginal constituencies where the Conservatives and Labour shared first and second place between them at the last General Election in 2010.
